The Danish international was little more than a fringe player for the Royal Blues under Dutch coach Fred Rutten, and the path has now been paved for the move he has been pushing for since weeks.
"The decision we came to is better for both parties. We split on good terms. I can now make the next step in my career," said Lovenkrands, who originally joined the Bundesliga side on a free transfer from Rangers two summers ago.
Schalke general manager Andreas Muller added: "Peter has always behaved properly and is a good kid. He is a high-quality striker, but unfortunately it has not worked out for him in the last six months with us.
"In his time here Peter had the bad luck that he continued to be set back by bad injuries just as he was playing well. We had to make a decision that was advantageous for both sides," he told the club's official website.
