The Reds are hoping their in-demand wide-man will sign on for a another year...

According to The Sun, Britain's most popular tabloid, Liverpool are ready to offer Jermaine Pennant a 12-month extension to his current contract.

The 25-year-old is all but certain to leave Anfield sooner or later, having fallen behind Dirk Kuyt, Yossi Benayoun and even Nabil El Zhar in Rafael Benitez's pecking order.

The former Arsenal star will become a free agent in the summer, and recent reports suggest he is close to penning a pre-contract with AC Milan.

But the Merseyside giants are hoping to cash in on a player for whom they paid Birmingham City £6.7 million in the summer of 2006, even though is unlikely to fetch more than £4 million now.

Real Madrid were on the verge of signing the ex-Notts County winger near the end of December, but his wage demands scuppered the deal and Los Blancos have since turned their interest elsewhere.

Pennant has played 55 Premier League games for Liverpool, scoring three goals - the most memorable of which came against Chelsea in January 2007.
