Los Ché rightback, Miguel nearly came to blows with a match official during last night’s 1-1 draw with Racing Santander but coach, Unai Emery has voiced his support for the defender.

Valencia managed to hold on and force a 1-1 draw against Racing Santander in the last 16 first clash of the Copa del Rey despite playing out the final minutes of the game with only nine men.

The second of the two sending-offs saw their Portuguese rightback, Miguel physically confront the assistant referee after he was flashed a straight red card for a rash challenge on Óscar Serrano.

Coach Unai Emery, however, did not feel that it was as bad as it looks, despite having to rush off the technical area to restrain his player.

“It was a difficult decision for Miguel to accept as he felt that he had touched the ball,” he explained during the post-match conference.

“His reaction was understandable because he lost his cool. There’s no need for any further or heavier punishment as it was nothing more than a heated moment,” he added.

As for the match itself, Emery believes that the result a fair outcome, but he is optimistic that his team will progress to the next round.

“It was a very competitive game and I consider the draw a just result.

“Eventhough Racing missed a penalty, we also wasted our own clear chances. I’m confident that we will be able to advance [to the quarter finals],” he concluded.

Valencia, the reigning Copa champions, will take on Villarreal in La Liga this Saturday before welcoming Racing to the Mestalla for the second leg next week.
