El Mesías single-handedly steered Barcelona to a stunning 3-1 win at Atleti overnight in the Copa del Rey and he was duly showered with praise.

Barcelona have one foot in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey following a 3-1 first leg triumph away to Atlético Madrid last night. And it was all thanks to Lionel Messi, who bagged a hat-trick before leaving the pitch to a standing ovation from the Vicente Calderón crowd, which included Diego Maradona.

Speaking to reporters after the match, ‘Little Lionel’ described the experience as unforgettable: “It was a very special moment for me to be given a standing ovation. It’s something unexplainable and a beautiful experience for any player.”

The 21-year-old sensation also expressed his delight with the win itself, before going on to justify coach, Pep Guardiola’s rotation policy.

“We are happy with this victory because it leaves us in a good position for the return leg at home.

“We do not have to prove anything to ourselves. If there’s anything to prove, it is to show that we are a group of 25 and that everyone has the ability to play well,” he concluded.
