Portsmouth Planning Triple Swoop? Empty Portsmouth Planning Triple Swoop?

Tony Adams is lining up offers for Joey Barton, Gary O'Neil and Edu...

According to a report in British tabloid newspaper The Sun, Portsmouth are preparing to fill the gaps left by the recent departures of key players by entering the January transfer market.

Pompey have recently agreed to let England international striker Jermain Defoe return to former club Tottenham Hotspur, as well as sanctioning the sale of French international midfielder Lassana Diarra, who joined Real Madrid.

It seems that manager Tony Adams will be allowed to spend some of the funds generated by those departures, with Newcastle United's Joey Barton apparently high on his wish list.

It is thought that Adams has made an enquiry for the 26-year-old England international midfielder and is willing to part with £5 million to secure his services.

Former fans' favourite Gary O'Neil could be in line for a return to Fratton Park as it is claimed he has failed to settle in Middlesbrough since signing for £5 million in 2007, with the South Coast club willing to return the full fee.

Brazilian international midfielder Edu, who Adams played with at the end of his career at Arsenal, is also a target, especially as his Spanish employers, Valencia, are prepared to let him leave on loan.

"I need to get people in as you don’t lose players like Diarra and Defoe, and before them [Sulley] Muntari and [Pedro] Mendes, without weakening your squad," Adams is quoted as saying.
